About the Producer
The Nusbaumer distillery is one of the more esteemed producers of eau-de-vies out there. It was established in 1947 by Joseph Nusbaumer in the Alsace region of France. Unfortunately there are very few details about the distillery itself out there but their website makes a point of the fact that they have 15 employees with an average experience level of 30yrs, highlighting the level of experience they have.
In addition to the more standard pear, cherry and plum brandies the distillery also produces some more specialty products like raspberry, black current and elderberry brandies. This cumin spirit I’m reviewing today isn’t a true brandy but it’s close enough and this sub could use more content so I’m posting it here. Despite the name this is actually made from caraway, which is related but slightly different from cumin.
Details
- Macerated black caraway seeds for 3wks in neutral spirit
- No details on aging in stainless steel but Nusbaumer brandies usually are.
- 43% abv.
Nose
Just s sledgehammer of spice with cumin and caraway. Almost violently powerful with no finesse whatsoever. Exactly what I expected but it still took me by surprise with how powerful it is. Bone dry.
Palate
Again a mountain of cumin and caraway. Has a strange bitterness to it that makes it a bit off balance and I not really digging. Doesn’t quite gel. Not bad but not for me.
Finish
Long with intense spiciness.

Overall
If you really like caraway this is for you; it is a dump truck full of spice. For me, it’s kind of weird and it’s not really for me; it’s just a bit off and disjointed.
