About the Producer

The Lemorton family has a long history of distilling Calvados with with the fifth and sixth generation now running the estate. They produce Calvados of many ages and vintages. This review is of the selection, their introductory label.

Details

  • 43% abv
  • Fermented and distilled from ~70% pears and the remainder apples.
  • Juice is naturally fermented on the lesses.
  • Cider is aged for 11 mo before distillation
  • Appellation Calvados Domfrontais
  • Aged at least 3yrs in French oak.

Nose

A rush of bittersweet apples and Bartlett pears. Good acidity adds balance and complexity. Traces of cedar wood and wood spice. Lightly sweet.

Palate

Lightly sweet with pears in syrup. Traces of woodspice. Not as complex as the nose but quite tasty. More full flavored and better textured than you’d expect at 43%. Texture is smooth and slightly oily. Medium bodied.

Finish

Medium with bittersweet apples.

Overall

A very good young Calvados that’s very fruit forward. Recommend and will be on the lookout for more Lemorton in the future.
