About the Producer

Copper and Kings of Louisville, KY is one of the most prominent craft brandy producers in the US. They go after a very bourbony profile with aging in ex-bourbon barrels and new charred oak and they are even on the KY Bourbon Trail. Copper and Kings uses exclusively pot distillation and never add anything to their brandy other than water. They use California grapes and ferment in CA and have the wines shipped to KY for distillation.

This is the one of the single barrel releases the distillery put out and is available on their online store. I have really been liking the single barrels they have been putting out after the switch in ownership so we will see how this ranks against the others.

Details

  • Made from 1/3 Chenin Blanc, 1/3 French Colombard and 1/3 Muscat of Alexandria.
  • Aged 12 years in an ex bourbon barrel.
  • 59.6% abv
  • Double pot distilled
  • No additives other than water.
  • $90 per 750ml.

Nose

Caramel , coconut, sweet vanilla. Decent amount of oak and wood spice. Hot pepper jelly, peppermint and black licorice. A great nose and interesting reminds me of rye with the spice and herbaceousness.

Palate

Again drinks a lot like a rye with an herbaceous and spicy profile. Mint, cinnamon, chili peppers and vanilla. Dry with very little fruit. It’s mouth coating and full bodied with a heavy, viscous and oily texture.

Finish

Long and dry with oak and mint.

Rating: 7

Overall

Overall: This is an interesting one; ultimately I prefer the Revival over this but this single barrel brings a very interesting profile that you don’t see in brandy very often. Could be confused for a well aged rye. While it isn’t very brandy like, taken on it’s own it’s very very good.
