Floodwall is an Apple Brandy put out by Copper & Kings in Louisville. Several of their products are named after features in and around Louisville and this is named after the 29-mile system of flood walls that were built after a record 80ft flood (60ft locally) of the Ohio River in 1937 and completed construction in 1957.
This brandy is made from sourced pot-distilled American apple brandy that has been aged 4+ yrs in ex-bourbon barrels and sherry casks. It’s non-chill filtered, has no additives other than water and is bottled at 50% abv. What more can you ask for?
Nose
A bit tart but rich with some spice. Sherry, jam, apple juice. Touches of cinnamon.
Palate
Sweet and fruity; apple juice with a decent amount of sherry. Sweet caramel and a little cinnamon. Full flavored and medium to full bodied with a heavy, gruff feel. Very good, balanced.
Finish
Medium-to-long. Sherry and cinnamon.
Overall:
I like this quite a bit, apple is definitely there but isn’t dominant. The sherry is noticeable and works well here although I like sherry aged Scotch too so your mileage may vary. This brandy is different than what I would call Copper & Kings house style which relies on ex-bourbon barrels and new charred oak but it worked out well. Recommended.
