American Fifth Spirits Apple Brandy

About the Producer

American Fifth Spirits is a micro distillery opened in Lansing, MI in 2015. While they do produce sell their spirits by the bottle at local stores, the main draw is their excellent cocktail bar which is probably the best in the area. Their main products appear to be a series of bourbon and malt whiskeys which quite frankly aren’t good to drink straight but they do use them to make good cocktails.

Details

  • Fermented from MI apples.
  • Aged for 8mo in 15gal barrels.
  • 40% abv.

Nose

Isn’t bad. Fresh apple juice and honey. Simple and unrefined but not bad at all. Light and medium sweet. No astringency, harshness or off aromas.

Palate

Light and sweet with apple juice and honey. Has some off notes that are almost vegetal or like rotting fruit. Reminds me of coffee beans that are way under roasted. What ever it is I can’t get over it. Not good.

Finish

Medium and actually pretty ok with apple cider and sweetness.

Rating: 2

Overall

Was almost decent but that off note on the palate just kills it. Surprising I didn’t get it on the nose. I can’t get through a full drink, avoid.
