Magnanini Grappa del Nonno

About the Producer

The Magnanini Winery and distillery is an Italian style winery that was founded in the Hudson Valley in 1983. They stick closely to their Italian heritage and with that comes grappa, both in traditional and flavored varieties. They publish that the estate grows Dechaunac and Seyval Blanc grapes but there may be more as well. I visited them earlier this year and I really enjoyed my time there.

Details

  • Distilled using vapor/steam distillation
  • Made from estate grown Dechaunac pomace
  • 45% abv
  • Got for $40 per 375ml

Nose

Earthy, lemon/lime soda. Traces of black licorice. A bit hot for its proof, which holds back. Good overall.

Palate

Rare occasion where the palate is better than the nose. Similar flavors to the nose but in different proportions. Lemon and black licorice is more prominent than the earthiness. Texture is light and almost effervescent. Medium flavored and bodied. Very good. Again good. Very on brand for a traditional Italian style grappa.

Finish

Medium and very earthy.

Rating: 5

Overall

This is a good grappa that adheres to the typical Italian style. Try it if you are in the area. The winery is very much worth going to!
