Maraska Kirsch Extra Dry Imitation Brandy

About the Producer

Maraska is distillery in Zadar, Croatia and was named after the Marasca cherry trees that grow in the region. In 1946 the Maraska factory and distillery was created from a consolidation of 3 other companies in Zadar and produced Maraschino liqueurs, chocolates and other candies. In 1949 the Croatian government officially recognized them under this name. Their line of products are extensive but they seems to primarily focus on liqueurs, especially cherry and maraschino liqueurs, and fruit brandies. I see their slivovitz and pear brandies by me all this time. This product is listed and extra dry imitation cherry brandy; I have no idea what the imitation means but presumably the extra dry is to differentiate from the liqueurs the company produces.

Details

  • Made from Marasca cherries grown on the Adriatic coast.
  • Kosher
  • 45% abv.

Nose

Barely any cherry; just the smallest trace. A bit astringent with lemon cleaner and harsh alcohol. Bad

Palate

Cherry flavor is ramped up vs the nose but so is the astringency. Harsh and bitter. Texture is prickly, harsh and a bit gritty. Alcohol is very prominent. Again very bad. Borderline undrinkable.

Finish

Short and bitter with cherries. Harsh with lots of rubbing alcohol.

Rating: 2

Overall

Well this is a harsh brandy with barely any cherries. It’s barely drinkable but I don’t know why you would. There are much better cherry brandies out there. Avoid. Still don’t know what the imitation means, maybe just adding cherry flavor to the spirit? Either way I don’t know what I was thinking trying this.
