Stoutridge Kirschwasser Cherry Brandy

About the PRoducer

Stoutridge is an eclectic distillery and winery in the Hudson River valley region of upstate New York. The winery was founded in 2000 by Kim Wagner and Stephan Osborne and was followed by a distillery in 2017.

The distillery produced a ton of different products from more common liquors like bourbon, rye and gins to less common eau-de-vies, grappa and amaro to the truly weird like liqueurs made from mastic sap, pistachio tree sap or myrrh.

If you are in the area I recommend going in for a tasting, even if just to try some of the wild flavors. The owners will be willing to talk your ear off on what they do and their opinion on wine making and distilling. Just a recommendation is that their distilled products are much better than their wines in my book.

Nose

Very interesting for a cherry brandy. Tart cherries but also a bit of a smoky aroma that I’ve never really gotten from an eau-de-vie before. Tart and not much sweetness. Good intensity. I like it.

Palate

First thing, the weight and body are excellent, best part of this drink. Flavors are tart cherries above everything else, as you’d expect. The cherry is more like the pits vs the juice or flesh. . Again has a trace of an interesting smoky character. Texture is heavy and syrupy.

Finish

Long with tart cherries and that smokey characteristic again.

Rating: 6

Overall

A very solid cherry brandy. The body and texture are great and the smokey note adds some uniqueness and complexity you don’t always get with eau-de-vie. Recommended.
