About the Producer

The Nusbaumer distillery is one of the more esteemed producers of eau-de-vies out there. It was established in 1947 by Joseph Nusbaumer in the Alsace region of France. Unfortunately there are very few details about the distillery itself out there but their website makes a point of the fact that they have 15 employees with an average experience level of 30yrs, highlighting the level of experience they have.

In addition to the more standard pear, cherry and plum brandies the distillery also produces some more specialty products like raspberry, black current and cumin spirits.

Details

• Fermented from yellow and red Williams pears.
• Slow fermentation for 4wks
• Ferment is rested for 6wks before distillation
• New distillate blended with older distillate in stainless steel vats.
• Aged for an unspecified amount of time in stainless steel.
• 43% abv.

Nose

Fresh and crisp pear. Is more the the dry pear flesh instead of the pear juice. Does a great job of capturing the pear essence. Surprising amount of mint. Tineiest hint of baking spice. Nose is decent but a bit light.

Palate

Sweeter and meatier than the nose. Fresh pear flesh. Mint is toned way down. Subtle and delicate which to be fair is how pears are anyways; they aren’t really in your face with flavor. Lightly sweet with a medium body and a prickly texture. A good palate, better than the nose which is kind of rare.

Finish

Medium and dry with baked pear.

Overall

A very competent pear brandy. Not the best I’ve had but definitely good. A solid choice if you can get your hands on it. I don’t know why they chose to bottle this at 43% abv when all their other spirits are 45% but I don’t think it looses much.
